Leadership and Winning?

"Why Athletic-Style Coaching Fails The Coach and The Client In Business"

In our society, at least the developed world, there is a lingering question about winning. I found this piece from Coachville's new leader Dave Buck on a declaration on coaching that is directed towards winning.

I'm going to use it to help you see the contrast in leadership styles from Dave's winning style to Mike's leadership philosophy: Generati.

I'm not doing this to show up Dave, I'm doing this to help you understand that as long as we focus on the outcome, rather than the journey, we are doomed to a cul de sac.

Leadership and A New Superpower

[There is no hidden meaning in the source I chose, it just happened to the be the first one with a definition of superpower I could use.]

A Page on the World: The Next Superpower?
By Ambassador Rockwell A. Schnabel, Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc., 2005, ISBN 0742545474.
Reviewed by Darris McNeely

Last May the French voted "no" to the European Constitution. Ever since, many have speculated that the European project is stalled or halted. Nothing could be further from the truth. The European Community is still a potent force in world affairs and growing larger. Anyone who thinks Europe will not be a player, if not the player, on the future geopolitical scene does not understand our current world.

The Next Superpower? shows how the structure of the European colossus is building, one layer at a time.

The core of the book is chapters 2 and 3, "The European Union as an Economic Superpower" and "The European Union as a Geopolitical Superpower." Chapter 2 begins with...

a definition of "superpower" from the Oxford English Dictionary: "[a state] which has the power to act decisively in pursuit of interests which embrace the whole world."

Unfortunately, my story begins here.

How Leadership Cons Its Followers

If you're reading this without any context, you may want to read this musing before continuing.

Remember the three things I pointed out that I learned from analyzing the con I was a part of in Colombia?

Leadership: Self-Centered or Sacrifice of Self?

This topic begins as I'm writing to a client about the 90-10 rule I use with people/myself.

Here's a typical response after people have been using the "modified Pareto" principle (90-10) for some time:

"I almost didn't do the important things today, so many things came up, X happened, Y called me, Z is in trouble….so I forced myself to do the work"

This is the effortful way to do 90-10--out of each day spend 10% or 144 minutes doing important stuff, not the effortless way I suggest below.

Leadership and "The Con"

This particular musing is set up from a real experience that happened to me in Bogotá, Colombia in 2000. I had been going back and forth to Colombia for some time working and playing with a group of entrepreneurs who were trying to find ways to get Americans to spend more money in Colombia. On my last scheduled visit, my Colombians friends introduced me to Laura. 22 hours later (I did sleep on it!), I asked her to marry me and without a doubt she's been the best companion I've ever had...and some people would say I'm lucky.

Leadership & Procrastination = 90/10?

I think procrastination or avoiding behavior as some call it is actually an emergent property of another motivation.

In other words, it’s not like you are trying to avoid something or procrastinate intentionally.

Some people would call it procrastination, or avoidance, and it could be.

However in my view, it’s none of those but a person being drawn away from the rote routine or detail; having to do types of things that are less interesting and much less motivating.

Leadership: Optimism On the Other Side of Pessimism

This topic came to me today while I was interviewing Dr. Otto Laske for the CPR Design Marathon. If you haven't joined in those free calls yet, you can do so by registering for our CPR Update at http://www.cprforthesoul.com/countdown .

One of the most difficult things for leadership to realize as we begin to awaken out of the sleep we have been in over the past 60 years of human development, is that people have a pre-wired capacity, capability and potential.

Leadership: Pushing Your Own Buttons

A leader I’m working with asked me to explain what I meant by “pushing my own buttons” and I thought it would make a good piece for LeadU News as I write the final edition for 2005. It’s often hard to believe how fast the time goes each year.

First off, by using the question this leader asked me, I’m modeling how to push your own buttons as a leader. For one, I have a utilitarian worldview working with my theoretical worldview, so it makes sense to take something that I can do for one and do it for many—that’s leverage, and is one of my buttons I can push
on my own.

Leadership and Image

Leadership and Image

Well I had my first image consultation yesterday.

In any case, I didn't do so bad, but I really learned a few things
about how I can present better...and become more telegenic...ugh.

You might call me the reluctant leader in some ways.

When I think of all the things people ask me to do as a leader, it's just flat
de-motivating at times. I wonder sometimes how many leaders feel the same
way...do you just want to lead?

Or like me (at least I admit it, so maybe there is help for me), do you just
want  to do things you like to do and have the rest done by everyone else?
